Common dental emergencies

Knocked-Out tooth

If a tooth is knocked out, it should be treated within one hour to aid reinsertion. Submerge your tooth in milk or saline within a sealed container, and bring it to our practice straight away.

Cracked or chipped tooth

If treated within one to two hours, we may be able to bond a broken-off piece of tooth back into place. Submerge the fragment in milk or saline in a sealed container and bring it straight to our clinic.

Dental abscess

An abscessed tooth can cause intense toothaches if left untreated. If you can see swelling along the gums by the roots of your teeth, it may be a draining abscess. What’s more, a salty taste can indicate infection. To prevent further pain, you may need antibiotics or a root canal.

Denture repair

Cracked or chipped dentures are often unwearable or unsightly. Please bring your broken dentures to our emergency dental clinic to determine whether a repair is possible or if a replacement must be made.

Crown or filling issue

A crown or filling may become dislodged and/or lost at any time. While fillings will need to be redone, dental crowns can be reused. Find and place the crown in a sealed container and take it to our office as soon as possible.

Bleeding or swelling

Certain dental emergencies are associated with soft tissues around the mouth, such as gums, cheeks and lips. If you are experiencing swelling or bleeding in any of these areas, we can assess your teeth to determine if there is any damage and whether sutures are required.

Frequently asked questions

When is it a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is classified as any development that requires urgent treatment to stop uncontrolled bleeding, avoid tooth loss or alleviate pain and swelling.

We recommend calling our emergency dental clinic if your tooth has been chipped, cracked or knocked out. Other situations requiring emergency dental can involve:

  • Dental abscesses
  • Broken teeth or dentures
  • Lost crowns or fillings
  • Soft tissue injuries around teeth
  • Gum inflammation around wisdom teeth

Note that toothache generally does not count as a dental emergency.

How do I get an emergency dentist appointment?

To get an emergency dentist appointment, please call our clinic on 02 4058 2904 as soon as possible for a same-day appointment. Our practice provides available times each day for emergency appointments.

What do emergency dentists do?

Emergency dentists are equipped to diagnose and treat a range of dental emergencies quickly and effectively. While it may be challenging to schedule a same day appointment with a standard dentist, an emergency dentist offers urgent care to patients in need.

Below are the most common dental emergencies we treat at Charlestown Dental Centre:

  • Dental abscesses
  • Lost crowns or fillings
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Cracked or chipped teeth

Does health insurance cover emergency dental?

Health insurance may cover emergency dental, depending on your policy. If you need emergency dental care, contact your health insurance provider and explain your injury and treatment options as soon as possible to confirm your coverage.

How can I avoid a dental emergency?

While some accidents are unavoidable, you can take certain steps to avoid dental emergencies and ensure your teeth are safe in everyday activities.

In order to avoid sudden tooth pain brought on by cavities, we recommend monitoring your sugar intake and brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing before bed.

If you play regular sport, then make sure to wear a quality mouth guard that will protect your teeth while you’re on the field, pitch or court. This will help you avoid painful dental emergencies resulting from sporting accidents.
